Obituary

Peter Dyck was born on January 23, 1928, to Bernhard and Katherina Dyck in Adelsheim, Ukraine. His siblings were Rudolph, Katie, Gredel, who died at age 1 1/2, and youngest brother Henry.

Peter is survived by his second wife Margarete, son Rudy (Tanis Keast), daughter Ingrid (Reg Penner), daughter-in-law Angela, Margarete’s children Ron Dick (Andrea), Nancy Neufeld (Kevin), grandchildren Kara (Tim Fehr), Ryan, Vanessa (Valerio Giesbrecht-Fiance), Raelyn, Matthew, Corinna, Dara, Jenny and great grandchildren Kailyn and Hannah.

He was predeceased by his first wife Lilly (1978) and his son Gordon (2016).

Peter’s family immigrated to Canada in 1948. He was baptized upon his confession of faith on June 5, 1949 at the First Mennonite Church in Winnipeg.

On December 1, 1951 he married Lilly Kliewer. They were married for almost 27 years and their marriage was blessed with three children: Rudy, Ingrid and Gordon. As a family they loved to spend time together camping, taking trips and spending time with extended family.

After a lengthy battle with cancer, Lilly passed away in 1978. This was a very difficult time for our family. We were very thankful when dad found another love, Margarete. They were married on Dec. 28, 1980. This blessing came with Margarete’s two children Ron (11) and Nancy (9). Our new family enjoyed getting together every Sunday for lunch, a tradition which carried on for many years.

Peter worked for the MB. Highways Department for 33 years. He was involved with the construction of many highways which crisscrossed the province including the Trans Canada East.

He also had a passion and a vision for seniors’ housing. He helped develop, construct and was the second administrator at Fernwood Place in Steinbach. He continued and helped plan for future senior housing, including Linden Place and Bridgepark Village.

Peter was a very passionate man. He was 100% committed to whatever he did, whether it was serving the Lord, providing for his family or serving his community.

Peter had a great joy for the outdoors which included camping, travelling with the family or just enjoying the fresh air while walking in the woods. Developing properties was one of his favourite pastimes. He would spend endless hours surveying the property, mapping the area for drainage to decide the best place to build and plant the tens of thousands of trees he ordered from Pineland Nursery. His dedication and unwavering commitment to whatever he undertook was a great example to all of us.

Peter always enjoyed Sunday lunch with the whole family. He also appreciated his friends and rarely missed a day having coffee with them. It was very special to dad when family came to visit, his eyes would light up, especially when grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to see him. Peter Dyck, of Steinbach, MB, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, Saturday, December 22 at Bethesda Place in Steinbach.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bethesda Place for the loving care they showed Peter.

The funeral service will be held Friday, December 28, at 11:00 a.m., at Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd. Steinbach, MB.

Donations in memory of Peter may be made to MCC, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9 or to the Bethesda Foundation, Unit 3-380 Stone Bridge Crossing, Steinbach, MB R5G 2R1.
