Obituary

It is with immense sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Abraham H. Friesen on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB. He was surrounded by his family as he took his final steps to his new heavenly home.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years Martha and their eleven children: Diedrich (Barbra) Friesen; Peter (Anna) Friesen; Anna (Ben) Sawatzy; Helena (Leonard) Falk; Jake (Eva) Friesen; Liese (Art) Friesen; Sarah (George) Wiebe; Henry (Sharon) Friesen; Martha (Alvin) Dueck; Maria Friesen; Esther (Don) Bercier. 41 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren.

Abraham was predeceased by his mother, father and 12 brothers and sisters. And survived by one sister-in law, Doris Friesen.

Dad was born April 2, 1927 in Gretna.

Dad was baptized in 1947 and belonged to the Sommerfelder Church. Dad was very involved in his church and was a Sunday school teacher.

Dad fell deeply in love with his wife Martha and they married in 1948. Shortly after they boarded a ship with love in their hearts, a whole lot of faith and sailed into the unknown. After 2 months they arrived in the jungles of South America. It is here they pitched a tent and their life’s journey began together in a strange land. Although he faced great challenges in the beginning, he persevered and never gave up. Eventually he turned the tent in a humble family home, and started farming, from his labour’s God provided them with many blessings. Dad also, worked many years as a schoolteacher and enjoyed it very much. In 1979, they moved back to Canada with their family.

Dad leaves a legacy of strong values for his children and grandchildren. He was a humble, hardworking, generous man with a deep and abiding faith in God. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Dads greatest treasure was his beloved wife Martha. He deeply loved her and his favourite story to share over the years was how he met his beautiful bride; he would talk about her beauty and how she is still so beautiful. On his final day on earth, he shared his most cherished story, the story of love “his beautiful wife”.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 1:30 P.M. at New Bothwell Sommerfeld Church, New Bothwell, Manitoba, with viewing at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery following the service.
