Dave grew up in St. Boniface and in St. Vital and was active in various sports and clubs: Rowing, golf (achieved a hole-in-one), baseball, football (Elmwood Tigers, St. Vital Mustangs, Blue Bomber training camp), hockey and swimming. His early adult years he achieved certificates and training in auto mechanics, welding, and held many jobs.

In 1964 he married Elizabeth Bowcott and worked as a welder and milk man for Coop Dairies. He delivered milk (and Beep) to the kids at home during the 1966 blizzard!

Dave moved his young family to St. Pierre, Manitoba in 1971 bought a 56 acres farm and did pretty well adapting from city life. He maintained a successful career in sales as the District Manager of Western Canada for Van Norman Machinery which took his family out west (Calgary, and Windermere B.C.) from 1973-76 where we all had many adventures learning to downhill ski and enjoying the mountains and hot springs. In 1976 The Butlers returned to St Pierre, and Dad contributed to the town by opening Butler’s Automotive and continued with his sales and management career in the Bearing Industry serving the Mining and Heavy Machinery companies while travelling and exploring northern Manitoba and Ontario. He also participated in the St. Pierre Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce, Minor Hockey (president 77-78), Frog Follies, 4H, St. Malo Horse Club, curling, coaching hockey and baseball.

Dad always loved to laugh and poke fun, a fun and encouraging dad and friend, great dancer, card player, played the spoons every chance he got.

Dad’s sales career provided the opportunity for him to move to Montreal in 1986 where he met and married Ellen eventually moving to Sault St Marie, where he contributed to the town, again enjoying many activities and clubs including curling and the legion. He would return home to celebrate with his family, all graduations, weddings, holidays, and to meet his grandchildren, Grandpa Dave loved babies and was a natural at calming a fussy one.

Dad travelled back to Winnipeg in 2001 to take care of his mother and Auntie Kiki and stayed, spending more time with family and friends, travelling around Manitoba and going on some excellent road trips with his children and grandchildren as he a seasoned and competent driver, reminding us always to “check our tires” when heading out on the highway.

These travels eventually had Dad moving to the Manoir in St. Pierre where he was welcomed back for the last chapter of his life, still able to drive to the city a couple of times a week. We are grateful he found his way home, and was in good spirits and happy to take us for a burger and beer or an ice cream cone in our hometown.

Dad, we will miss your unique sense of humour, your generosity and love for us… we will always miss being able to give you a phone call and hearing you say you were “just about to call”. We will cherish the many times you popped by our homes or workplaces with presents and a great story!

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pierre Church, celebration of Dad’s life to follow at the sugar shack, covid protocols will be in place.

In lieu of flowers, spend precious time with family and maybe treat a friend to a meal or ice cream cone.

Kim, Laura, Burke, and Stacey would like to thank the St. Pierre RCMP, paramedics, St. Pierre Manoir (Katherine), Julian Tessier, Rolly Gagne, all of you who sent condolences through social media, texts, and calls; your support has made this difficult time easier for us and we are forever grateful.
