Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother Sydney Reimer on April 4, 2022 at Arborg Hospital at the age of 68 years.

Syd was predeceased by his parents, Abe B. Reimer in 1997 and Betty Reimer in 2014.

Remaining to cherish Syd’s memory are siblings: Harold (Marlene) of Arborg, Rose (Allan) Dueck of Landmark, Janice (Delmer) Plett of Arborg, Tim (Alvina) of Arborg, Cliff (Lucille) of Morris, Ted (Irene) of Winkler, Bruce (Evalina) of Arborg, Rick (Elaine) of Arborg, Lyndon (Vi) of Arborg; 53 nieces and nephews and their spouses; 32 great nieces and nephews.

Syd was born on February 3, 1954 in Steinbach, MB to Abe B. and Betty Reimer. The family lived in Steinbach until April of 1961, when Syd was 7 years old and then moved to Morweena MB. Syd attended Elmdale Elementary School, Morweena Elementary School and Hayek Interlake Mennonite Collegiate. Syd excelled in his school work; everything needed to be done to perfection.

In Syd’s childhood and early adult life in Morweena our family was farming but this occupation gave way to moving buildings and this became Syd’s career. When dad retired, Syd became part owner of Reimer Building Movers, along with brothers Harold and Bruce from 1994 until his death.

Work and travel largely defined Syd’s life. In his independence, Syd often traveled alone, but many trips were taken with friends Xay and Vandy Lee and their family. Syd traveled to Laos multiple times, Thailand, China, Germany, Belize, Great Britain, coast to coast in Canada, plus multiple destinations in the USA.

Kindness and generosity also defined Syd’s life. Syd loved his community and family and took genuine interest in the many people he met either through work or travel. In his younger years, he played recreational hockey and held the captain position of his team for awhile. He loved to attend local informal events, chatting with neighbors, drinking coffee and eating together. Syd’s generosity led him to assist in humanitarian projects and he gave liberally to charitable causes. When there was a need to help our mom in her later years, he was there, respectful and kind. They spent many hours doing picture puzzles and crossword puzzles.

Within the past year, Syd purchased and moved to a property near Poplarfield MB. On this acreage he was able to enjoy one of his most favorite hobbies, pruning and tidying up trees and brush.

The last 5 weeks of Syd’s life were spent in Arborg Hospital, gradually being forced to yield to the intrusion of a cancerous brain tumor. How like Syd to call the tumor “a flower” – always ready with dry humor! During his illness Syd give testimony to his faith in Jesus, affirming his readiness to go meet his Creator and Savior. What comfort and assurance!

A public meet, greet and eat (faspa) will take place on April 9, 2022, 5:00-7:00pm, at Crossings Funeral Care, Steinbach MB.

Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on April 10, 2022, at Morweena EMC, Morweena, MB. with viewing before the service at 2:00pm. Internment and snack will follow.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Komolafe at Arborg Hospital as well as Dr. Beiko at HSC for their professional care for Syd. Tammy and the nursing staff at Arborg Hospital served Syd with top-notch respect and honor! We thank you sincerely.
