It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Jacob Penner at the age of 65, on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the St. Boniface Hospital.
He is predeceased by his parents, Henry & Doris Penner, two brothers, Lawrence Penner (in infancy) and Peter Penner.
He is survived by his children, Stuart (Kaitlin) Penner, Sylvia Penner, and Sheryl (Colin) Friesen, and his 4 granddaughters. His three sisters, four brothers and their families.
Robert was born on June 18, 1958, in St. Pierre, MB to Henry & Doris Penner. He grew up in Pansy and attended Barkfield School. As a young adult he did various labour roles, including working at CN Rail and later at a butcher shop in Blumenort. It was here that he learnt the meat trade and later with his wife, Margaret, that they became the owners of the Country Smoke House. Many remember him coming to their farms to butcher and allowing the kids to watch the process.
Robert enjoyed going to auctions and collecting antiques. He loved to visit at small restaurants for coffee and breakfast and would often make his rounds at various restaurants on the weekends. Before we would have woken up on Sunday mornings, he will have already been C&G Village Inn, meaning we missed the opportunity to go for breakfast and have their French toast. Robert enjoyed doing landscaping and in his later years would cut grass for some residents in Grunthal. He also enjoyed going for rides in his side-by-side and scooter, visiting various friends that were close by.
A special thank you to the medical team at St. Pierre Hospital, Bethesda Regional Health Centre, the ICMS and palliative team at St. Boniface Hospital, for caring for our dad with such kindness and compassion.
A livestreamed funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at the Bothwell Christian Fellowship Church, 20 Sara Ave, New Bothwell, with viewing 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in the Grunthal Cemetery.
