Obituary

Jocelyn Leigh Phillips, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at Villa Youville Personal Care Home, in St. Anne, Manitoba on November 24, 2023, at the age of 68 after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her son, Craig Phillips, daughter and son-in-law Melissa and Jon Stevens.

Jocelyn was the daughter of Grace nee Peterson, and Frank Hicks. She is survived by her children Melissa (Jon) Stevens, Craig (Kim) Phillips, and grandchildren Grace and Cole Stevens, and Zoë “Shabadabadoo” Phillips. Jocelyn is also survived by her four siblings, sisters Deanna Brown, Betty Hicks, Andrea Randall, brother Bobby Hicks, and predeceased brother, Donnie Hicks.

Jocelyn was born on February 15, 1955, in Marysville, New Brunswick. She graduated from Fredericton High School in 1974, with a focus in accounting. She then married and moved to Moncton, New Brunswick where she worked at Eastern Bakeries, and had her two children. In 1987 she moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jocelyn worked in accounts receivable for a few different companies before being hired onto East Man Feeds, where she worked for 20 years. She was well respected within the company, and made some very close friendships while working there.

Jocelyn was very creative, and talented in multiple arts & crafts mediums. Some of these included painting, stained glass work, knitting, and quilting. She also donated many of her projects to great causes. Her quilts were so beautiful and detailed that she won awards for them. She loved giving her creations to friends and family, especially her grandchildren, who were always happy to receive them. Her baking skills were amazing, and both of her children remember stealing treats, especially Christmas sugar cookies, from the freezer.

Jocelyn was an amazing, and supportive grandmother that loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her granddaughter Grace, fondly remembers her “Grandma Jocelyn” teaching her how to knit, and sew, and her grandson Cole, always talks about the time they made pillows together, and how she always made him mini ice-cream cones. She loved all three of her grandchildren so much. Because of Jocelyn’s cancer, her memory, especially short term, wasn’t working well for her. Even so, after Zoë was born this January, she always remembered that she had a new granddaughter in her life.

Jocelyn’s family would like to thank all of the staff at Villa Youville, in Ste. Anne, Manitoba. The care she received could not have been better, and she always had a smile on her face whenever people were there visiting. Many of her caregivers came into her room towards the end of her life to give her a hug, and to say goodbye. Her family always took comfort that she was being well taken care of. We would also like to thank Jocelyn’s extended family including her close friends, Lynda Barker and Sue Gillingham for all of their help and support during this time.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
