Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and peaceful passing of Glenda Darlene Douglas, at her home on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Darlene was predeceased by her husband Raymond; parents Ambrose “Bud” & Dolores O’Connor; brother-in-law Harold Douglas; and nephew Lyle Douglas.

She is survived by her brother Dan (Suzan) O’Connor; nephews Jerry (Michelle), Chris (Cathy), Andy (Amanda), Scott (Britt), Mark (Yuka), Shane, and Brendan Douglas; soul sister Kath Swain; goddaughters Nicole and Melody Swain; godson Kelly Kattler; and their families.

Darlene was born in Nova Scotia on May 17, 1957. Her father’s military service meant frequent family moves across Canada. His final posting to Winnipeg, Manitoba, was the place Darlene called home.

She resumed her nomadic life following her marriage to Ray in 1980. This time, it was to mining towns in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario including Leaf Rapids, Lynn Lake, Snow Lake, Pickle Lake, and Flin Flon. During these years, her home was welcoming to everyone who came to their door. Darlene was a “people person” whose career choices always allowed her to meet and get to know people, share a story or a laugh. Whether it was at CIBC, Flin Flon Credit Union, Saan, or Staples, her co-workers soon became forever friends.

Given the opportunity to move south, Darlene quickly found a new home, a new job at the local Huskey station, and a new circle of friends in the community. As always, she created a haven that was welcoming to all.

Ray and Darlene’s move to Richer also allowed her to follow her passions in life: gardening, her dogs, and her family. Darlene’s family wasn’t defined by blood, but more by the love given and received. She always had time to listen, offer a shoulder to lean on or give guidance for any of life’s issues – happy or sad, big or small.

Following Ray’s death in 2018, her place of healing and peace was tending to her yard and gardens with her beloved dogs, Casey and Teddy.

She will be lovingly remembered and missed by family and friends across Canada.

Many thanks to her neighbours and friends for the caring, kindness and assistance these last few years, which allowed her to remain in her country home. Also, a very special thanks to Dr. Ally Fredette, the staff at Ste. Anne Hospital and CancerCare Manitoba for their compassionate care.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Darlene’s life will be held at a later date. A private family interment will take place in Nova Scotia.
