On Sunday, March 24, 2024, our father, William Schalla, passed away at The Courtyards at Linden Woods, Winnipeg, at the age of 85.
Dad was born on August 8, 1938, to Johann and Nathalie Schalla. He was one of eleven children growing up on the farm in Bristol, Manitoba. He married our mom, Tina H. Wiebe on September 15, 1963. They lived on the farm in Bristol where they raised three children: Calvin, Denise, and Scott.
Dad will always be defined as the farmer in the family. The farm was always a popular place for the gatherings of aunts, uncles, and a multitude of cousins–to either visit or even to work. His welding skills were always in demand and he prided himself in being able to fix almost anything with a good welding job. His determination to learn to fix almost anything led to the farm’s success. He enjoyed sharing this with the family by pursuing off-farm interests at Royal Lake and Lake of the Woods. Upon retirement, dad’s final prize was the new farmyard that he and mom built after selling the dairy farm. He enjoyed walking among the hundreds of trees that they planted, trees that will stand and grow as a testament to his memory.
He is survived by his wife Tina, son Calvin, daughter Denise (Kim), son Scott (Angele), four grandchildren, Jocelyn (Jesse), Natasha (Ryan), Domantas, and Kezia, and two sisters Marlene and Emiline, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
William was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, and six sisters.
The family would like to thank the staff at Red River Valley Lodge in Morris and The Courtyards at Linden Woods for their excellent care and attention given to dad over the past four years.
Donations in memory of William may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba 10 – 120 Donald Street; Wpg., MB., R3C 4G2.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing prior to the service.
The interment will take place at Rosengard CMC Cemetery, R.M. of Hanover, MB.
