Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Derek Shelest on May 17, 2024, at the age of 49 years.

Derek was predeceased by his brother Brent, grandparents Peter & Ann Shelest, Clara & Art Yager, and his godmother Pat Macmillan.

He will forever be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Janelle and their dogs Gibson and Baxter, his parents Linda & Larry, parents-in-law Pierrette & Julien Lemoine and sister-in-law Jacqueline & Dillon, Harvey and Lowyn. Derek also leaves to mourn his close friends, Shane and Lorrie, and the many friends and family that were by his side during this last year.

Derek’s summers were spent at Caddy Lake’s Green Bay Resort where he loved fishing, sitting by the fire with a rum and spending time with friends and family. If he wasn’t at the lake, you might have seen his alter ego DJ Deres at socials, weddings or just playing music at home at “Club 219”.

Derek enjoyed the simple things in life with Jan as well as spending a week at an all-inclusive resort in the winter, a weekend in Las Vegas, and visiting some of Winnipeg’s breweries for a flight and a bite to eat.

A special thank you to the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, the nurses and doctors at the Buhler Cancer Centre at the Victoria Hospital and to the Southern Health Palliative Care staff, health care aides and home care nurses.

The family extends their appreciation to the team at Meditek for their continued support through his cancer diagnosis. Thank you also to the Ste-Agathe Pharmacy for their kindness and compassionate service.

At Derek’s request, no funeral service will be held, but we invite you to celebrate his memory in your own ways.
