James Payette, born October 11, 1942, in Kingston Ontario, to Elizabeth Payette and raised by Wilfred and Mary Shortall, left us with heavy hearts on June 2, 2024, where he lost his battle with lung cancer in Ste. Anne, Manitoba.

James leaves behind a legacy of love and family. His children Ken (Val), Jimmy, Heather (Floyd), Nicole (Claude) and Danielle (Rudy), were his pride and joy, each carrying forward his spirit in their unique ways. His 16 grandchildren – Steven (Diane), Janene (Travis), Jenny (Jonathan), Michaela, Shayne, Carlee (Jory), Hailie (Julian), Cordelia, Kayla, Amelia, and Jacob – were blessed with his boundless love and the twinkle in his eye that only a proud grandfather could have. His eleven great grandchildren that brought him immeasurable joy and a sense of fulfillment.

Dad was a man of the open road, finding his calling as a long-distance truck driver, even though farming cattle was his passion. His life behind the wheel was a testament to his adventurous spirit and dedication to providing for his family. His love for country music and movies was more than a pastime – it was the soundtrack of his life. The sight of him in his iconic cowboy boots, blue jeans and western shirts while humming a country tune, is a memory cherished by all who knew him.

A man with a sweet tooth, Dad had an enduring love for cookies and ice cream, though he hated milk. His whiskey was a companion on many an evening, shared with friends and family, laughter echoing in its wake. Dads caring nature made him the heart of any gathering, a magnet for stories and smiles.

Dad was a man who lived life fully and loved deeply. His presence, marked by warmth and a ready smile, leaves a void that can never be filled. As we remember him, we hold onto the countless memories that make up the mosaic of his remarkable life. Rest in peace, dad, grandpa and old grandpa, know your legacy of love and laughter lives on in the hearts and those you touched.

Our family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Ste. Anne Hospital, particularly Dr. Danielle Lanouette and Jill from the palliative care team, for their unwavering support and compassion during his final days.
