Obituary

Jacob David Falk was born on June 26, 1920 in Arkadak, Russia to David and Maria Falk. He died peacefully at the Niverville Personal Care home on Saturday, June 22nd, 2024, at 103 years just four days before his 104th birthday.

Our father is survived by his children: three sons; Ed (Anne), Harvey (Irene), Darryl (Mary), two daughters; Evelyn (Derek Single), Marilyn (Denis Cote), 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Elnora in 1994, and his parents David & Maria Falk, all his brothers and sisters and one grandson.

Dad immigrated from Russia with his mother and siblings. They arrived in Canada on June 21, 1930 just before Dad’s 10th birthday. He received his Canadian citizenship on January 4, 1967.

Our father was a farmer for most of his life and eventually rented out his land and worked at the Niverville Feed Mill till his retirement. Dad and Mom enjoyed many trips to Winnipeg, to the local coffee shop and time with the children and grandchildren. Dad had 30 years without Mom and till the age of 90 still drove his car to visit his children. When we would go to visit him in the PCH, he always greeted us with a smile and a huge HELLO. He enjoyed playing games, especially winning at checkers which he still played till just before he was hospitalized.

Dad only had a Grade 5 education, but was able to read English very well. While in the PCH we often found him reading the bible and his many cards that he kept over the years. He also loved looking at new and old pictures and would reflect and comment with accuracy on the old ones.

Dad enjoyed canvassing for the Blind for many years. He was dedicated and relentless doing this and would return two or three times to homes until someone was home.

Our father moved into Assisted Living in June, 2007 and then in April, 2018 moved into supportive care. Shortly after his 100th birthday after suffering a stroke, Dad was in hospital for a few months and then moved to the Personal Care Home in November, 2020.

On Friday, May 17th Dad fell and broke his hip. He was not a candidate for surgery so he was sent back to his home at the Niverville Personal Care home to convalesce. He was bedridden and sometimes really frustrated that he could not get up. The family spent a lot of time with him and certainly had many meaningful conversations. We are so thankful for the staff at the Niverville Personal Care home who cared for him with so much love and attention.

We grieve the loss of our father; however, we are assured that Dad is now in heaven, a much better place, without pain and suffering.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., at the Niverville Heritage Event Centre, Niverville, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service.

The interment will take place at Heritage Cemetery, Niverville, MB.
