Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Edwin Erdman Peters, 84, at Rest Haven Care Home in Steinbach, MB., on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Edwin leaves behind his devoted wife, Eva and their four sons: Cameron and his wife Karen and their children, Alex, Samuel, Addison and Aidan; Colin and his wife Gwen and their children, Brittney (Tyler) and their son Declan, Colson (Tyrin), Seth and Rick; Mason and his wife Vanessa and their children, Spencer, Kassidy and Madisson; Roger and his wife Colleen and their children, Owen, Elinor and Ezra.

Born and raised on a small farm south of Landmark, MB., Edwin was the son of Erdman and Katharina Peters. He developed a strong work ethic from a young age, which he later instilled in all his boys. He also very much enjoyed jokes and pranks – and his boys benefitted from that too!

It was while working as a mechanic at Penner Dodge in Steinbach that a friend set Ed up on a blind date with Eva Wiebe of Hochfeld, MB. Weekly dates led to an August wedding and then fast Eddie and little Eva ran the family farm together for many years. When the old farmhouse grew too small for their lively boys, Ed built a new home, all while maintaining the farm.

Ed enjoyed machines of all kinds and he worked on everything from cars and trucks, to tractors and the towering lags at Landmark Feeds. He had a soft spot for John Deere tractors and many of his grandchildren played with his collection of replicas. Later in life, Ed developed woodworking skills that he used to the benefit of many.

Although a farmer at heart, Ed was confident and content when the time came to sell the farm. Together, he and Eva started a landscaping business and spent many happy hours on their tractors, cutting grass and clearing snow. They built another new home in Blumenort.

Retirement allowed Ed the opportunity for several short term mission trips. He traveled to Belize, Mali, Mexico and Bolivia, where his jack-of-all-trade skills and gentle presence came in very handy. Ed also had time to work a little for Colindale Construction, which he enjoyed very much.

Ed was wise in many ways, but perhaps most remarkable was how he knew when it was time to move on. Just as he moved off the farm with confidence, he knew when it was time to leave the house in Blumenort for a condo in Steinbach and then a room at Rest Haven. When he made up his mind, there was no looking back and never a complaint.

Known throughout his life for his kindness, generosity and dependability, Ed put many miles on his vehicles to care for family and friends. His steady, sure presence was anchored by a deep and abiding faith in God and His Word. It was this quiet strength, found in Jesus, that allowed him to adapt to difficult changes over the last years, as his body failed. Ed anticipated the fulfilment of God’s promise of a new life, free from sorrow and pain. We will meet again!

The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Rest Haven for their thoughtful and diligent care. Special thanks also to Bruno Kampen, whose time and care was very important to Ed. Your efforts made his life a little easier!

The livestreamed funeral service will be held Friday, August 16, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., at Prairie Rose EMC, Landmark, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at the church cemetery.
