Obituary

Andrew U. Hiebert, born on July 15, 1944, to Abram and Katharina Hiebert, near New Bothwell, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024, at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach, Manitoba. Andy always said he would make it to at least 80, and as with most things, he accomplished it.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Sylvia, daughters, Charlene Kronen & Charmaine Martens, grandchildren Kari & Kyle Rempel, Evan Vogt, Morgann Martens (Ian Weir) & Mitchell Martens, great-grandchildren Elizabeth & Liam Rempel, and his brother Ben (Kathy).

He is predeceased by two sisters and 10 brothers.

Andy met, fell in love, and married Sylvia Edinger in Thompson, Manitoba, where they had two daughters, Charlene and Charmaine. Six years later he moved his young family to Grunthal, Manitoba where he bought the restaurant, The Dairy Capital. Andy and Sylvia owned and ran the business for three years. After selling, he bought and ran A&A Auto in Kleefeld, Manitoba, with his brother Tony. A year later, he bought the Ham Dog House, which he ran together with his family for 17 years. Great food and many celebrations were shared with all customers of the drive-in restaurant. From here, he worked with his brother Dave at Palliser Furniture in Winnipeg, Manitoba, followed by Loewen windows until his retirement. Andy had a remarkable work ethic, incredibly high standards, and his motto was, if you’re going to do a job, do it well, or don’t do it at all. After all, hard work never hurt anyone.

Andy was a man of many passions. He found joy in fishing and was a devoted fan of the Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Jets, often sharing spirited discussions about his favorite sports. A lover of politics and current news events, he stayed informed and engaged with the world around him. His appreciation for country music brought a soundtrack to his life that resonated with family and friends alike.

Andy took great joy in fixing things, making them better than they were before, and building various things for his family. Countless hours were spent buying from garage sales, tinkering in his shop, and if he could turn it around and make a few dollars, he was a happy man.

He considered home, his favorite place in the world to be, where he found comfort and happiness in the company of his family. Andy will be remembered for how he showed his love for his family, maybe not through words, but in the many things he did for and with them. Especially the moments he spent with his great grandchildren, Elizabeth & Liam, would have been a favorite time for him. He always treasured every moment spent with family, eager to create lasting memories. His favorite meals included tenderloin steak and his beloved Sivie’s homemade perogies, which were often enjoyed during family gatherings. He also had a knack for lifting spirits, frequently sharing jokes, pranks or funny stories that brought laughter to those around him.

He will be missed.

Special Thanks to the wonderful staff at St. Boniface and Bethesda Regional Health Centre for making this time as easy as possible.

And a very important thank you to Paul Hiebert. We will forever be grateful for the support you have given to Andy, Sylvia and family. Your kindness and love in this time has been a blessing to all of us.

A private family service has been planned.
