Gloria June Unger, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother went to be with Jesus on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Gloria was born to JD and Emma Penner on August 23, 1940. She married the love of her life Don Unger on June 11, 1965. Don and Gloria celebrated 59 years of marriage this past June. They have two children, Scott (and Candice), Robert (and Shaylene), and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren – Emily (& Matt, Wrenley and Ray), James (& Karissa), Mersadie (and fiancĂ© Braidy). Gloria also had three siblings, Carol (Gifford who passed away in 2011), Curt (Sandy) and Dean who passed away in his youth.
Her faith – Gloria had a deep and radiant faith in the Lord. She demonstrated this in her love for others, and especially to her family. She loved “her boys” (Don, Scott and Rob) and stood by them and encouraged them and most of all prayed for them. Gloria was not afraid to share her faith and communicate the truth of Jesus to those around her. It’s her love for Jesus that was and now is her greatest and most lasting characteristic of her faith. Praise the Lord!
Gloria was known for her sense of humour and often zany off-the-cuff comments. She loved to joke around and say things that lifted the spirit of the room. Her clever whit will be missed.
Trips to Hawaii characterized most of her married life. She loved spending time there with Don and on occasion Scott and Rob were blessed with a trip to the islands too. These trips always included memories with her parents J.D. and Emma Penner who traveled there regularly. Gloria also spent most of her summer weekends at the cottage in Lake of the Woods. These were incredible family memories not just with Don and the boys, but also with JD and Emma, the Penner family, and with Robert and Shaylene and their kids Emily, James and Mersadie.
Gloria had a real passion for Missions and seeing the Gospel spread to all nations. She had a desire to be a part of international missions that sought to see people come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. She dedicated innumerable hours to the Missions Committee at WEFC. Communication with missionaries around the world and most notably planning the annual Missions Conference at WEFC. I (Robert) remember fondly the house dedicated to all the costumes, decorations and accoutrements that were to play a major role in that year’s conference. It was a sight to see.
Baking pies, Sunday roasts, Easter egg hunts, a glass pickle hidden in the Christmas tree, remembering birthdays and sending cards, her passion for the Bombers and so many other memories make up what we have come to love and appreciate about Gloria over the course of her life. Each person close to her will hold on to one or two or even many special things that Gloria did that will bring back a flood of memories. We are so thankful for each of these little memories that demonstrated her love for her family and for those around her.
Don and the family would like to give a special thanks to:
A private memorial is being held to honour the memory of Gloria.
