Henry E. Rempel, died on November 5, 2024, at the De Salaberry District Health Centre, St. Pierre, MB. While having been hospitalized for some time to fight off an infection his stroke was not expected as he had been gaining strength in the last weeks.
We are grateful for the gift that our dad was as husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa. He was husband to wife Marianne (nee Wiebe) who died in 2002, Elma (nee Dickson) who died just six weeks ago on September 23, 2024, father to Gerry (Jeanie) Rempel and Al (Brenda) Rempel and step-father to Leslie (Bruce) Huber, Dean (Heather) Dickson. He was also grandpa to Jarret Rempel and Evan (Rachel) Rempel, Warren (Sydney) Huber, Jared (Ivy) Huber, Jeff (Jasmin) Dickson, Derek (Nicole) Dickson. He was great grandpa to Silas, Ellie, Brodie, Georgia, Serenity, and Jack. He was also a brother, uncle and friend in a large family and two families that he married into.
He was predeceased by Marianne and Elma his wives that he shared his life with and Sharon his daughter-in-law, his parents, all of his eight siblings and many of the extended family too numerous to mention individually.
Dad was born on July 5, 1933, in the Rural Municipality of Stanley to Erdman J. & Anna Rempel. Graced with 91 years, he started life near Morden where he received his early education at the Mennonite Collegiate Institute, Gretna. He grew up on a farm. After marrying Marianne on June 23rd, 1956, they tried farming along with other members of the family. In 1961, he made the big move to Niverville to a small piece of land next to his brother Ed on Highway 59. He went to Winnipeg to get additional work as a truck driver and he and mom created their life and grew their family on this 40 acre farm.
Dad eventually started with Reimer Express Lines, a trucking company, where he held a number of roles eventually retiring in July 1998. We learned that many of his colleagues and former customers greatly appreciated his dedication and service in the work that he did. We remember dad leaving early every morning to make the commute to his work. He provided for his family through hard work and steady efforts on the little farm. We were well cared for and never felt deprived of opportunities or things needed.
Our mom, Marianne passed away suddenly January 10, 2002, leaving a large hole in dad’s life. He left the farm eventually settling in Niverville. In 2007, he married a new life’s partner, Elma Dickson and moved to her hometown of Killarney. Dad became a part of this new community taking an active role in church life. Dad always was finding ways to be helpful willing to fix anything that needed attention. At 80 years of age we insisted that dad no longer climb on the roof to fix windows. He was an active member of the golf club, managing to shoot his age at one point. He took up bowling as a senior also managing to represent Manitoba in a senior games competition in the Maritimes.
Dad was a person of steady character, an innovative problem-solver when it came to mechanical things. He was in his element when he was in his garage with a wrench, in-hand figuring out how to fix something. He was a person who sometimes out of necessity had to find ways to make things work. Dad was also not one to waste a dollar – a buck saved was sometimes worth more than two or three earned.
We feel blessed by dad’s devotion to us as family, to a faith that sustained and provided direction to his life, and to people whether part of his family or beyond. He cared about what happened to you and in his way provided a listening ear, measured advice and always love. We are who we are because of the trajectory that he helped us to find. We love you Dad and are glad that you will find peace and full healing with your Lord and Saviour now.
God is able to do much more than we ask or think through His power working in us. May we see His shining-greatness in the church. May all people in all time honor Christ Jesus. Let it be so. ~ Ephesians 3:20-21
