The family of Renate Bachmeier announces her passing on Monday, November 25, 2024, at Menno Home for the Aged, Grunthal, MB., at the age of 96 years.
Left to mourn her passing are her two sons; Axel of Winnipeg; Ron (Carol) of New Bothwell and daughter in law Gloria, along with them she also leaves 10 grandchildren and their spouses, and 37 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Renate was born in Berlin, Germany on June 5, 1928. She was predeceased by six brothers, four sisters, husband Josef, son Reinhard, daughters-in-law Lorraine Bachmeier and Lydia Bachmeier.
Renate lived through the horrors of war as a teenager. Renate’s parents went to church regularly. Renate came to faith in Jesus at the age of 15 and was baptized in September of that year.
She met her husband Josef after the war when they were both working on a dairy farm in Germany. They were married in Berlin at her mother’s house on December 23, 1950. In Germany, Renate trained as a midwife and briefly worked at this job in Dortmund, Germany, where her son Axel was born. In 1955 they immigrated to Canada under the sponsorship of McDermot Avenue Baptist Church in Winnipeg.
In Winnipeg Renate worked as a nurse’s aide at the Health Sciences Centre, till her and Josef bought a small mixed farm in the R.M. of La Broquerie, about five miles south of Steinbach. Renate managed the upstart of the farm while Josef worked as a construction laborer during the week in Winnipeg.
In 1959, they had saved enough so they could both work on the farm full time. Renate and Josef scratched by on minimal earnings from the farm but still managed to have two more sons, Ron in 1961, and Reinhard in 1963.
In 1968 they bought a dairy farm about two miles closer to Steinbach and at that point they began to make a decent living.
In 1972 when Josef became ill and was sick for a couple of years, Renate took over most of the farming operation till he recovered.
Renate and Josef farmed there till 1980. Afterwards Renate worked at Steinbach bakery part time and later in Winnipeg as a home care worker during the week.
After the farming business was sold, Renate and Josef went to church regularly and were deeply involved in the serving and leadership of the church.
Renate and Josef lived on a number of hobby farms. First in the Sarto area, then the Mitchell area, and finally in the New Bothwell area. During this retirement period Renate loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Renate was known for her tasty meals, and excellent pastry, especially the magnificently decorated tortes that she created for every birthday. Renate had a dream of going to Hawaii in her younger years and she travelled there three times with her husband.
When Renate’s husband died in 2011, after 60 years of marriage, she moved to Fernwood Manor in Steinbach. She resided their till her health failed in April of 2021. Subsequently, she moved to the Menno Home in Grunthal where she resided till her death.
The livestreamed funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service.
The interment will take place at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
