Walter B. Isaac, aged 98, of Kleefeld, Manitoba, peacefully passed away on November 29, 2024, with his wife Betty by his side.
Born on September 24, 1926, to David L. and Justina (Bartel) Isaac, Walter was the fourth of ten children in the Isaac family. He spent his childhood on the farm, where he developed a strong work ethic that would define much of his life.
Dad’s education took place at Gruenfeld School, where he attended all eight grades under the guidance of the same teacher. As a young man, he worked in various roles from threshing crews, logging camps, and mines, to the construction of bridges and the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. Dad was a very competent, hard worker and was a favourite among his employers.
On October 22, 1950, Walter married Betty Schellenberg, who lived just a mile and a half from his childhood home. This union of 74 years was blessed with 5 children. They settled on the very land Walter grew up on, where he continued to live his passion for farming, working the land with dedication.
Dad gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized, together with Mom, into the Church of God In Christ, Mennonite, on June 3, 1956. His faith and commitment to God were uppermost in his life. Dad often ended his prayers to God with the phrase, “That we will be ready for Christ’s return at all times.” He unselfishly gave of his time helping with disaster relief projects, including in Guatemala and Rapid City, SD. In 1993, Dad and Mom spent time as houseparents in the Montreal boys’ unit.
In 1987, Walter and Betty built a new house where they enjoyed their retirement years together. Even in retirement, Dad remained active in many areas of life. He enjoyed helping the children, gardening, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and travelling. A highlight was the trip to Ukraine to visit his forefathers’ birthplace.
We children knew that we had the best Dad anyone could wish for. He as a quiet, patient man who gave us a wonderfully secure childhood. We enjoyed working together with him on the farm. As the grandchildren came along they spent enjoyable hours with him too, riding along on the combine at harvest time. He would also join them in hockey games in his basement, and even on the ice, playing goalie for them. Crokinole was another game he enjoyed playing with his children and grandchildren.
Dad lived on the same section all his life until he moved to Maplewood Manor earlier this year. Many thanks to the staff there for their wonderful care of Dad.
Walter will be lovingly remembered by his wife Betty, and their five children- Beverly & Walter Toews, Conrad & Kathleen Isaac, Magdalene & Gary Penner, Eileen & Charles Isaac, and Bonnie & Roger Toews, all of Kleefeld, Manitoba; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; one brother Alfred Isaac, and four sisters Leona Braun, Gladys & Milton Fast, Jean & Clarence Giesbrecht, and Joyce Koop.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Church of God in Christ, Kleefeld, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow at the church cemetery.
