Helena Thiessen, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on December 18, 2024, in Evanston Grand Village, Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 99.

Born on August 15, 1925, in the Donask Region of Russia (now Ukraine), Helena was a remarkable individual who immigrated to Canada as a five-year-old child. Fatefully, she found herself on the same boat as her future husband, John, who was just seven years old at the time. This serendipitous encounter would blossom into a beautiful partnership that lasted an impressive 76 years.

Throughout her life, Helena embraced various roles with grace and dedication. Known primarily as a homemaker, she also contributed her skills in administration at Gulf Canada, demonstrating her versatility and commitment to her work. Helena’s personality was marked by her sweetness and warmth, which endeared her to many. She enjoyed a vibrant social life, surrounded by numerous dear friends who cherished her kindness and spirit.

After retiring, Helena, along with her husband John, discovered a love for traveling, indulging her curious nature and broadening her horizons. Her adventures allowed her to create lasting memories and share experiences with her family, cementing her legacy in their hearts.

Helena is survived by her devoted husband, John; her four daughters, Gladys Sawyer, Janette Neufeld (Dan), Darlene Flathers (Darwin), and Debbie Lewis (Gregg); five grandchildren, Shannon, Chad (Leslie), Lisa (Darcy), Sean (Tommi-Ann), and Travis (April); and eleven great-grandchildren, each of whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Michelle Robinson and her great-granddaughter Clair, whose memories will forever be cherished by the family.

Helena Thiessen will be remembered for her sweet nature, her love for her family, and her zest for life. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched with her gentleness and unwavering love.

Respecting Helena’s wishes, there will be no funeral.
