Obituary

Tina Brandt, of Blumenort, MB, died peacefully at Rest Haven Personal Care Home, on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at the age of 94.

Tina was predeceased by her parents, and all her 11 brothers and sisters. The last remaining sister died just this last January. She was also predeceased by 15 nieces and nephews.

Tina experienced a series of traumatic events in her pre-teen years. She lost sight in her right eye, her baby sister died, fire completely destroyed their house, barns, and feed supplies, and then her father died. The grieving continued when a brother was institutionalized due to mental illness.

But Tina rejected a life of self-pity. After all, she believed in God’s faithfulness, which she had witnessed when the community had come to her family’s rescue. The young girl matured early into a responsible adult, working hard, serving others and alleviating their pain. She recognized the importance of family, friends, and the church community to which she belonged. Her baptism on June 19, 1940, and membership in Blumenort EMC, were integral to her faith and commitment to Christ.

Tina worked in the poultry processing industry in Blumenort for more than 40 years, mostly with Granny’s Poultry, where for many years she was forelady. She enjoyed the interaction with the people with whom she worked. In 1994, at the age of 71, Tina retired to take care of her sister, Susie.

Since 1940 the two sisters had been inseparable as they took care of their mother and brother. Now Tina became the main caregiver of her stroke-ridden sister and their brother.

In her later years, Tina spent much summer time in her garden, cultivating flowers and vegetables. In winter, she was quick to grab her knitting needles and some yarn, creating slippers or gloves, ready to give as gifts. Those who knew Tina knew of her hospitality, whether it was treating neighbourhood children with cookies, or serving home cooking to family and friends.

A special “Thank You” to all staff at Rest Haven Nursing Home for the patient, loving interaction and care you gave Aunt Tina since November 2014. Remember how she loved ketchup, which somehow found its way into almost every non-dessert dish? You were there for her on those days when her pain and needs were high and even ketchup didn’t suffice.

Many of Tina’s nieces and nephews visited her regularly, and she appreciated every visit. In her later years, when Aunt Tina needed help or a listening ear, she leaned particularly on two of her nieces, Annie Friesen and Tina Reimer. Thank you!

Tina’s nieces, nephews, and their children remember her practical ways of caring, and her loving commitment to others. We treasure her legacy.
