Obituary

We sadly announce the peaceful passing of Edward (Eddie) Oswald, on Sunday, January 5th, 2025, at the age of ninety-eight (98). A cherished son, devoted uncle, steadfast friend, and dedicated farmer, Eddie’s life was a testament to hard work, love for family, and the quiet beauty of rural life.

Eddie entered the world on March 11th, 1926, at the Oswald Farm in Friedensfeld, Manitoba. From his earliest years, he found his calling in the rhythms of farm life, taking over the family farm with brother Erwin in 1963, and nurturing it into a thriving testament to his relentless effort and dedication. Eddie had a natural affinity with the land and took immense pride in his Farmall-H tractor, which stood as enduring symbols of his life’s work.

While Eddie chose a path of bachelorhood, his role as “Uncle Eddie” became one of his most cherished identities. He was more than an uncle; he was a jokester, storyteller, and guide to his numerous nieces and nephews, instilling in them the value of honesty, kindness, hard work, and love for nature. Family gatherings were a source of immense joy for Uncle Eddie, marked by laughter, shared memories, and the aroma of his famously homemade sauerkraut and potatoes.

Uncle Eddie was an integral part of his community, a member of the Farmer Union of Manitoba (1960-70’s), and a founding member of Friedensfeld Community Center. His kindness, humor, and generosity left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know him.

Uncle Eddie will be fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication, gentle nature, and the joyful simplicity with which he embraced life. His legacy lives on in the soils he tended and in the hearts of family and friends who loved him dearly.

He is survived by his two brothers, Karl and Erwin and three sisters, Lil, Florence and Ruth, loving sister & brother in-laws as well as many nieces and nephews and a community that will deeply miss his gentle presence.

Uncle Eddie was preceded in death by his beloved parents Daniel & Matilda and seven siblings William, Albert, Martha, Art, Fred, Lena and Frieda, who have awaited him in heaven.

A livestreamed service celebrating Uncle Eddie’s extraordinary life will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Steinbach, MB., with viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the service to follow at 11:00 a.m., with interment at the St. Johns cemetery in Friedensfeld, next to many family and community members. All who knew him are warmly invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate a life well-lived. The service will be available to view on the St Paul’s Lutheran Church YouTube channel.

In Uncle Eddie’s memory, contributions can be made to St Paul’s Lutheran Church. His enduring spirit and legacy of kindness will forever grace the hearts and lands he touched.

Many Thanks to the staff at Bethesda Place for their compassionate & loving care to Uncle Eddie.
