Obituary

Leona May Kornelsen née Loewen, age 88, passed away in her home at Lindenwood Manor in Winnipeg, MB., in the early morning hours of Tuesday, February 4th, 2025. She had been diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm which ruptured, causing her to collapse in her bedroom with her husband by her side.

Born on October 16, 1936 in Morris, Leona was the third child in a family of six children. She was baptized in the Rosenort EMC church in 1952 and married John Kornelsen on September 19, 1959. John and Leona recently celebrated 65 years of marriage – a relationship characterized by friendship, love and commitment to Christian faith. It was evident early on, that Leona and John shared an adventuring spirit as career choices took them to Mexico, back home to Riverside, and then eventually on to Virden, Hudson Bay, Swift Current, Edmonton, China and ultimately retiring to Winnipeg.

Leona will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother who lived her life with love and service to her family. Her dry humour and understated wit kept her children and grandchildren giggling and recollecting quotes long after their delivery. She was an excellent cook and her jam-jams were legendary. A favourite Christmas activity was baking and decorating cookies with her grandchildren.

Leona is survived by her husband, John P Kornelsen, her children Myra (Bill) Clarke, son-in-law David Plett (Junia), Lowell, Jeff (Bonnie), and James (Michelle Janzen), along with fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her son Barry, her firstborn son who died in infancy, and daughter Lenore who passed away in 2014.

Leona is also survived by her grandchildren: Jessica (Isaiah) Bleese (and their children Peter, Leona, Freddie and Jonno), Katie (Emery) De Roo (and their children Amelia, Rene and Milo), Emily (Alain) Reimer (and their children Micah, Addisyn, and Matthias); Tanner (Lauren Sheedy), Noah, Annika; Tori, Aaron (Holly Christensen), Hannah (Jack Harris), Matt; Maya, Solace, Liam, Blair; as well as ten great-grandchildren.

The funeral will take place on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at the Ft Garry EMC Church, 602 Pasadena Ave., Winnipeg, MB.
