Obituary

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Mary Block, aged 92, went to be with her Lord and Saviour.

She will be dearly missed by her son Ernie (Marj), children Jaclyn (Matthew Block) Ryder, Trigg and Bristol, and Kelli (Matthew Wiebe) and Emma: her daughter Lorna, son David and daughter in law Bertha (Carl Dueck), children Ruth (Dylan Konrad) and Jessica (Clayton Penner) Ellie, Everly and Adler.

Also left to mourn her passing are her sisters; Helga Froese, Edith Nikkel, Lydia Mathes and a brother Harold (Marlene) Warkentin.

She was predeceased by her husband Peter (2022), her son Terry (1995); brothers in law Frank Froese (2004), Peter Nikkel (2025) and her brother Ernie in 1956.

Mom was born to George and Elizabeth (Peters) Warkentin on March 31, 1932 and spent a happy childhood on a farm in Pigeon Lake, MB. As a 12-year-old, she and her parents moved to Steinbach, MB. She grew up and spent three years teaching at Bristol, Ekron and Greenland North schools.

Upon her confession of faith in Jesus, she was baptized in the Steinbach Mennonite Church on May 14, 1951. She remained true to her Lord to the end. She married Peter Block on November 15,1953 and settled in Winnipeg where Terry and Ernie were born. After 5 years, they decided to move back to Steinbach. There the arrival of Lorna and David completed the family.

Some of Mom’s passions were reading, cross-stitch and gardening. She loved to pass along her love of gardening to her granddaughters who maintained tiny plots of vegetables planted in grandma’s garden each year. Another event that mom loved were the crepe lunches she prepared for her granddaughters.

In her later years Mom memorized whole chapters of the Bible, something she loved to do, and which kept her mind sharp. Some verses that she especially cherished were Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death or life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height or depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The livestreamed funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service.

The interment will take place at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
