Following complications related to COPD, quite unexpectedly, Jean-Louis passed away at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg at 45 years old, with his mother and Rick by his side.
Jean-Louis, the beloved son of Jacqueline (Barnabe) Sabourin and the late Ulric Sabourin, and step-dad Rick Tycholis, was a brother held dear by Natalie (Thom Edwards), Jeremy (Anna Barlow), and Justin (Danica Marcon-Lajeunesse). His warmth and generosity also touched his nieces and nephews, Julianna and Lane Edwards, Jett and Bo Sabourin, Jaxon Marcon-Lajeunesse, and Ivy Sabourin, as well as to his friends and neighbours, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness.
Jean-Louis is predeceased by his father, Ulric Sabourin, maternal grandparents Pierre and Isabelle Barnabe, paternal grandfather Amedee Sabourin, uncle Louis Barnabe, aunt Gloria Williams, cousins Joel Barnabe and Michelle ( Barnabe) Chartier.
Diagnosed with Schizophrenia at 17 years old, disrupted and changed his life course. Jean-Louis volunteered at Winnipeg Harvest for a couple of years. He was an avid fan of the Winnipeg Jets and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Jean-Louis’s enthusiasm for his hometown teams was infectious. His love for game shows, movies, concerts, and rock music spoke to his zest for life and the joy he found in his world. Jean-Louis’s interests were not mere pastimes; they were extensions of his personality and his ability to find happiness in the simple things.
Especially in youth, he was described by those who knew him as creative, Jean-Louis had a knack for seeing beauty in the mundane and transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary. Then, the schizophrenia took hold, and his world forever changed. His kind nature made him a friend to many around him.
Jean-Louis Sabourin’s journey through life was a very difficult one marked by the ability to remain gentle, kind and tried not to be a burden to others. His memory will be cherished and his presence sorely missed. As we bid farewell to Jean-Louis, we take solace in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us in the days to come.
Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at 2:00pm at the Club Chez Nous (joined to St Jean Hall) in St Jean-Baptiste, Manitoba. A private interment will take place at a future date at St Jean-Baptiste Cemetery.
We wish to thank the PACT Access West, in particular Baden and Kim, the doctors and nurses at Grace Hospital for their compassionate care. Thank you also to his neighbours who showed him many kindnesses.
