Obituary

Our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Paulina Miller Bartel, was born to Phillip and Elizabeth Goossen Miller on August 19, 1935, in Morris, MB. She peacefully passed away on March 2, 2025, at the Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, Manitoba.

Mom’s childhood years were spent on the family farm near Rosenort, MB. She had 11 siblings, and the regular chores of milking the cows, feeding farm animals, riding horses with her brothers, and helping tend the garden gave her a love of the great outdoors. She developed a work ethic that stayed with her through life and with which she will be remembered. Mom was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite as a teenager, serving God faithfully throughout her life. We, as a family, appreciate how, in her quiet way, she gave us courage to make sure steps for Heaven. Mom found her life’s companion in Eldon Bartel, and they were married on May 10, 1957, in Rosenort, MB. They enjoyed sixty-five wonderful years together, and their home was blessed with two sons and three daughters.

Dad and Mom spent the first 10 years in Greenland, MB. In 1968 they moved to Swan River, MB, where she embraced the challenges of homesteading in a very tiny house with no running water. Several years later, they moved to Benito, MB. Wherever they lived, Mom’s gift of hospitality was shared with many people. Dad and Mom spent time in various mission posts making lifelong memories and friends. Mom loved her grandchildren and delighted in helping them through their growing-up years, and her great-grandchildren brought a sparkle to her eyes. Each grandchild was gifted with one of her handmade quilts. Her delicious homemade bread and cottage cheese perogies were a definite highlight of family gatherings.

We will always be grateful to Mom for her loving care of Dad, especially as his health declined. She lovingly stood by him through his suffering. When Dad moved into full care at Maplewood, Mom moved into a self-care apartment. After his passing two years ago, she bravely carried on with courage in spite of many lonely hours. She depended on her family and friends, who were dear to her.

As it became apparent that Mom’s health was rapidly failing, she made the move into full care at Maplewood Manor on January 29, 2025. We as a family are so very grateful for the excellent care given to her by the staff.

Those left to cherish fond memories are her children: Veronica and Myron Penner, Swan River, MB; James and Ruth, Benito, MB; Cindy and Darcy Isaac, Cromer, MB; Merlin and Angela, Benito, MB; Liz and Sheldon Wohlgemuth, Ste. Anne, MB; twenty grandchildren; and forty-five great-grandchildren. 2 sisters: Adella Thiessen and Norma Isaac, 2 brothers: Walter and Phyllis Miller, Otto and Rochelle Miller; brother-in-law Johnny Dueck, sisters-in-law Libby Miller and Delores Miller. Her in-laws: Jake Bartell, Fred and Gladys Bartel, Margaret and Melvin Warkentin, Adeline and Dewayne Warkentin, Larry and Connie Bartel, sisters-in-law Louise Bartel and Vivian Bartel. She was predeceased by her husband, parents, parents-in-law, one son-in-law, three brothers, four sisters, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

A service of memories will be held for 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Swan Valley Mennonite Church, Harlington District, MB

A Funeral service will be held for 10:30 AM on March 6, 2025, at Swan Valley Mennonite Church, Harlington District, MB. Followed by Interment and reception.
