Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Sarah Dyck passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2025, after two weeks in hospital battling influenza.

She was born December 9, 1932 , in Morden, Manitoba to Henry & Katharina (Tina) Nikkel. She was the sixth child in a family of eleven, six brothers and four sisters. Her first years of sojourn on earth were spent on a farm at Morden, moving to the Interlake on a small dairy farm when she was almost five. She was schooled in a rural country school that had classes to grade eight. She took grade nine by correspondence, but could not finish all her work, as her mother was dying of cancer that year. Many years later she took the GED test and received a grade twelve standing.

She taught Sunday school for many years, was involved in ladies ministries, most often in the programming committee. She taught VBS, counseled at camp, and together with Dad served as youth leaders and deacon couple, among many other church activities.

She worked at the first A&W in Winnipeg, and later at Dog & Suds (a food drive-in) as head hostess. She spent the next years raising four children. When her youngest son was ten, she went back to work part time. One year at a fabric store, then almost twenty years working part time in Christian bookstores. She then started Terry Toppers, sewing hooded towels, bibs, receiving blankets and more for seven years. They moved to Landmark from Winnipeg to assist with childcare for her youngest grandsons. In 2008, they moved to Steinbach to retire. Together with Henry, she played violin, and he played guitar as a ministry for seniors (into their 80s!).

Betty was predeceased by husband, Henry, her parents Henry and Tina Nikkel, and nine siblings.

She is survived by:

• one brother, Elton (Vivian) Nikkel;
• daughter Eunice (Mervin) Friesen; grandsons Brendan (Christi) Friesen, great-grandsons Kai and Rhys; Christopher (Ellie) Friesen; Patrick Friesen (Dr. Jessica Jellins), great-grandchildren Oscar and Hazel;
• son Dr. Gordon (Marlylles) Dyck, grandsons Nathan Dyck, Dr. Andrew Dyck (Jeremy de Jong), Michael Dyck (Samantha Plett), great-grandchildren Marshall and Sydney, Jeremy (Sarah) Dyck, great-grandchildren Joshua, Ethan, Alexander and Chloe;
• daughter Elizabeth (Timothy) Sawatzky, grandchildren Jordan (Michelle) Sawatzky, great-grandchildren Luke, Juliet and Ella; Matthew (Kari) Sawatzky, great grandchildren Adelynn and Beckham; Nicholas (Josie) Sawatzky, great-grandchildren Arlo and Sullivan; Selena Delorme (adopted);
• son Barry (Ruthanne) Dyck, grandsons Aaron Dyck, great-grandsons Elijah and Ari, James Dyck (Amber Friesen), Kieron Dyck (Josée Huberdeau), and Toban Dyck (Paige Van De Kerckhove).

Betty also leaves to mourn her friends in Bridgepark Manor whom she loved. Special thanks to the ACCU and cardiac care staff at St. Boniface Hospital who made Mom’s final days comfortable.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. Viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. with a family graveside burial at 10:00 a.m., at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
