Jake (Jacob) Harms passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg, MB., at the age of 98 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 75 years, Anne Harms, and by their children and their spouses: Ken and Sharon Harms, Kathy and Eric Fast, Jake and Helene Harms, Ron and Dianna Harms, Ray and Eileen Harms and Gerry and Karin Harms. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren and by two sisters, Lena Franz and Elsie Dyck.
Jake’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him and his legacy of kindness, grace, wisdom and warmth will continue to inspire us.
He was well known, respected and appreciated in the Mennonite community in Manitoba and beyond for his lifelong service to the church, first as lay minister and then pastor in the Whitewater Mennonite Church, as lead pastor in Sargent Mennonite Church in Winnipeg and interim pastor at several other Mennonite churches, and for his contributions to Mennonite Church Canada, to Mennonite Church Manitoba and to Douglas Mennonite Church.
The memorial service to celebrate Jake’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Douglas Mennonite Church, Winnipeg, MB.
Special thanks to the medical staff at Health Sciences Centre and Concordia Hospital for the care provided during his final days in those hospitals.
