Obituary

Susan Dueck Lumley (nee Doerksen), age 98, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the Heritage Life Personal Care Home, Niverville, MB, on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The family rejoices that she is home with Jesus, her Lord and Saviour.

She is survived by four children: John (Norma), Karen (Jeff), Bev (Cal), Ken (Jeanne); her eight grandchildren: Rachel (Patrick), Aaron (Michelle), Kate (Jeff), Breanne (Quinn), Maxine (Dal), Kim (Chuck), Amy (Kyle), Mark (Madi); her eighteen great-grandchildren: Clara, Sophie, Marlie, Charlie, Cameron, Jazmyn, Josie, Alfie, Mason, Olive, Farrah, Beau, Owen, Zeke, Tess, Romeo, Trinity, Asher. Susan adored her family and liked nothing better than to spend time with them.

Susan is also survived by her brother George (Anne), her sister-in-law, Anne Doerksen, and many nieces and nephews.

Susan was born on April 3, 1926 to John E. and Helena Doerksen on the home farm near Niverville. She was the 10th of 12 children. In 1949, she married Abe R. Dueck and settled in Kleefeld. There they farmed and raised their family until Abe’s untimely death in 1967, leaving her a widow with four young children, aged 3 to 12. Three years later, she married John D. Cornelsen from Morris, a widower with six children of his own. Caring for a large, blended family presented many challenges but she persevered. They were married from 1970 to 1992. After moving to Winnipeg, she met and married Lawrence Lumley in 1998. After Lawrence’s death in 2003, she moved to British Columbia. She thoroughly enjoyed her time in BC where she lived with Ken and Jeanne. She returned to Manitoba in 2009 and moved into the Niverville Manor. She had come full circle.

Susan lived for many years at the Niverville Manor, endearing herself to many of the residents and staff. She liked to boast that she was one of the residents who had lived in the Manor the longest. Last fall, she moved to the Heritage Life PCH next door. Her mind was still sharp, but her body was growing weaker. About a week ago, she contracted the influenza A virus. Her body was not able to fight off the virus.

Susan loved to paint, and she was good at it. Many of her paintings decorate the walls of her children and grandchildren. We will treasure these as a reminder of her love.

Susan was a woman of beauty, grace, and dignity, and was deeply loved and admired by all who knew her. She had a radiant smile and always had a kind word to share. In her own words: “We never know what a kind word will do, so let’s practice goodness always. As a blossom cannot tell what becomes of its fragrance, so we cannot tell what becomes of our influence.”

Susan loved her Saviour and worshipped Him until the very end. She prayed faithfully for her family. One of her favourite Bible verses was Hebrews 13:5b, “God has said, I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.”

The family thanks the Niverville Manor staff and the Heritage Life PCH for the excellent care they gave Susan. Thank you for loving her and showing such kindness to her and to the family.
