Wilma Unger, age 89, of Landmark, MB., passed peacefully on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.
She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Giesbrecht (Ivan) , Dawn Penner (Ross), JoAnne Kehler (Ric), and Ruth Froese (Karl), ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, her sister Valida Friesen and her sisters-in-law Caroline Loewen, Lydia Loewen, Katherine Loewen.
Wilma was raised by loving Christian parents in a family of ten children. As an adult she went to nursing school at the original Concordia Hospital and worked as a nurse in a hospital and a doctor’s office. John, who would become the love of her life, started courting her while she was in nursing school. They sealed their love with a kiss upon engagement and were together for almost 40 years before John passed suddenly in 1996.
After marriage in 1958, Wilma shifted from nursing to homemaking and motherhood. Early on she took a sewing course offered by the government to newlyweds. There she learned to draft patterns and proceeded to sew for her children and their dolls. Mom worked diligently at creating a vegetable garden and putting up the produce in fall for her family to enjoy throughout the winter. She joined quilting and sewing groups at church. She loved and supported the missionaries from her family and church, writing letters to them weekly for years. Her family, nieces and nephews, friends, and missionaries benefited from her love, prayers and generosity.
Over the years her relationships were an expression of her love. She loved her sisters, her daughters, their husbands and their families very much. Wilma loved God and she loved her church. Her deepest desire and prayer was that everyone would know God’s love as she did. We will miss her.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach MB.
