It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Funk, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Peter was born on June 23, 1938, on a rural farm in Barkfield, Manitoba. His early years were marked by hardship, but from a young age he developed a strong work ethic that would define his entire life.
On December 2, 1961, Peter married the love of his life, Betty Funk (Peters). Together, they briefly resided in Winnipeg before settling in Steinbach, where they built a life filled with hard work, community, and family.
Peter began his career at Loewen Chevolds in the autobody shop, but his natural gift for connecting with people soon led him into sales. It wasn’t long before he became an award-winning salesman, recognized for his achievements, talent, and dedication. Never one to rest Peter set out to build something of his own, and so Funk’s Auto Sales was born.
In 1977, Peter acquired a Mazda franchise, and not long after, he set his sights on something bigger. Competing against five other candidates and clearly the underdog, Peter was awarded the Toyota franchise as the Toyota executives saw fire in his eyes. From that moment, Funk’s Toyota (now Steinbach Toyota) took root. Under Peter’s leadership, it became one of the top dealerships in the prairies, earning numerous awards both for sales & service.
Beyond his own dealership, Peter was also a business partner in several other ventures, Brookdale Pontiac, Eastern Nissan, & Hylife. He was driven by investing his talents in many ways and had a deep passion for building opportunities and seeing others succeed.
Peter’s unmatched work ethic, sharp business sense, and shrewd dealings were legendary. But beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a man who loved life, loved work, and most of all, loved his family deeply.
Above everything, Peter loved Jesus. His faith was quiet but steadfast, shown not through words but through countless quiet acts of kindness he extended to others. He lived his faith with humility and was always ready to lend a helping hand without fanfare.
Peter leaves behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, and love. He will be deeply missed by his wife Betty of 63 years, and their children Rick & Karen Funk, Myrna & Clem Chaput, Reg Funk, and Kelvin & Sheila Funk, along with seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The livestreamed memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
Private family interment at Heritage Cemetery.
