It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dorothy Fehr (nee Thiessen), 84, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB, with her family by her side.
Left to mourn her passing are her children, Barb (Phil) Guenther, Ken Fehr, Lynn (Garry) Neufeld, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four step children (Ken Dyck, Karen Geransky, Barb Blue and Deb Orbanski) and their families. She also leaves to mourn, two sisters, Elsie Hoeppner and Rose (Pete) Fehr, two brothers-in law, Peter Harms and Ed (Agnes) Fehr and their families, in addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary, her first husband Henry, son Brian, sister Frieda and her second husband, Ben.
Mom grew up on a farm in the Wingham District, near Elm Creek, where she received her formal education. In 1954, she was baptized and became a member of the Wingham Mennonite Church.
At the age of 22, mom went to work in Winnipeg, at the Canadian Wheat Board, which she enjoyed a great deal. In 1959, she married our dad, Henry Fehr. They lived in Winnipeg, where they were active members in the Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church.
Our parents were blessed with four children, Barbara and Brian in 1960, Ken in 1964 and Lynnette in 1968. Sadly, Brian passed away two weeks after the twins were born. This was an incredible loss mom carried with her all of her life.
In 1963, the family moved to Steinbach where mom stayed at home to raise her family. Once we were older, she worked for Agricultural Employment Services as an administrative assistant for a number of years. This was followed by more than 10 years of service as a Home Care Worker.
Mom was very active in the community, volunteering at the MCC Thrift Shop, Rest Haven, Mennonite Heritage Village Museum and collecting donations for multiple causes she had a real passion for. Mom and dad served in many capacities at Steinbach Mennonite Church, including more than 20 years as Deacons. They were also Gideons for over 25 years.
In 2001, dad passed away suddenly and Mom found herself on her own. She established a busy life of volunteering, traveling and enjoying her grandchildren. She had a wide circle of friends who she enjoyed and shared many wonderful experiences with.
Some years later, mom met Ben Dyck and she began a new chapter in her life, including the addition of a whole new family. They shared a few years together, prior to Ben experiencing health concerns. In 2017, she found herself alone again after Ben’s passing. However, days later, the birth of her first great-grandchild brought her tremendous joy.
We will miss her caring, warm and hospitable manner. All who knew her will miss being spoiled by her wonderful cooking. She was the ultimate host and her delicious baked goods created quite a reputation.
Mom, you touched so many different lives along the way and you will be forever loved and missed by so many.
The Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 11:00 am, at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB with viewing prior to the service.
