With her family by her side, Lena Krentz, passed away peacefully September 24, 2017 at Bethesda Place in Steinbach, Manitoba at the age of 94 years.
Lena was born in Steinbach on August 30, 1923 to Rudolf and Elizabeth Pachal, the third of five children. She grew up on the family farm in Friedensfeld, attending Oswald School where she completed grade 7 and then started working at the hospital at the age of 13. She met R.B. Krentz and was married June 27, 1942. They lived on the homestead for three years before Roy built the home where they lived for nearly 60 years.
Roy and Lena were the proud parents of five sons: Reg, Don, Ralph, Ken and Dale. Everyone who knew or met Lena heard about her “boys”. After five tries, she did not get her girl but she always felt blessed to have her four beautiful daughters-in-law.
Mom worked hard her whole life and was especially proud of her yard and garden where she personally planted hundreds of flowers every year to showcase the many weddings that were photographed there. Countless people enjoyed the fruits of her labour as she shared hundreds of her cherished gladiolus with church, family and friends. Our family always knew how lucky we were to have traditional family dinner at the farm every single Sunday growing up for every child and grandchild that could make it. Mom enjoyed making things beautiful and started working painting many homes in Steinbach, a few in Winnipeg and even her son’s church where she worked countless hours.
One of mom’s greatest joys was watching her sons play hockey, following them all over Manitoba, the U.S. and Europe cheering them on. As her family grew, she felt even more proud and blessed with every grandchild and great-grandchild she was given. More hockey, ringette, volleyball and baseball to watch.
Mom and Dad moved off the family farm and lived together for eight years in Steinbach before Dad passed away in November, 2012. She immediately moved into Bethesda Place where she quickly became very well known for her beautiful smile and contagious laugh. Once she started, it was hard for her to stop and we would all have to join her.
Left to cherish mom’s memory are her sons: Don (Barb), Ralph, Ken (Brenda), Dale (Mavis), daughter-in-law Ilse (Phil), 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Today she celebrates eternal life with her husband Roy, son Reg and grandson Terry as well as loved ones who went before her. Our family lost an amazing, kind, incredible and truly wonderful matriarch; a woman of true faith, life and love.
The family would like to thank all those who provided love, care, and support to our mom in her last few years especially her beloved sister Norma and her husband Seaton. Mom enjoyed the countless visits all these years and our family cannot thank you enough for your love. Our heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Bethesda Place for taking such good care of our mom these last five years. Also, we wish to express gratitude and appreciation for all your prayers, cards, sympathies and shared memories of Mom that we received from family and friends.
We all lost an amazing, kind, incredible and truly wonderful woman. A person of real faith who lived life with laughter and loved us deeply. Mom, you were an inspiration to all who had the good fortune of knowing you and your kindness knew no bounds. You worked tirelessly for your family with a smile on your face and that unforgettable giggle. Oh how we will miss that laughter. Rest now. You were so loved and will never be forgotten. You are home.
