It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Annie “Elsie” Hildebrand of Steinbach, MB on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach, MB at the age of 80 years.
Left to mourn are her husband, Dick Hildebrand, three sons, Dan, Tim, Jerry (Paula), one daughter, Marilyn (Anthony) Thiessen, eight grandchildren, Eric, Kaia, Matthew, Brittany, Warrick, Grace, Israel, Abigail, and one sister Margaret (Frank) Dyck.
She was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Anna Peters, sister Helen and brother John.
Mom was born on February 26, 1940 in Plum Coulee, Manitoba and raised in Gnadenthal, Manitoba. She was baptized at Blumenort Mennonite Church on May 25, 1958 and her faith remained strong throughout her life. Mom first met dad at her brother John’s wedding. Apparently dad was quite the poet and won mom’s heart and on April 28, 1963 they were married. Dad had already started a business, Hildebrand Music (originally known as Hildebrand’s Bargain Store), and mom joined him in his retail venture. After their four children were all in school, Mom went to night school to study accounting, and for many years did the bookkeeping for the family business.
Mom loved cooking and baking for her family and made the best lasagna, cherry pie and roll kuchen. Mom loved the outdoors and was always outside tending to her garden, mowing the lawn, or shoveling the driveway. She took pride in having a nice looking yard and insisted on being the one to do these things. She would spend many days canning tomatoes, watermelon and cucumbers, as well as other fruits and vegetables. She loved sewing picnic blankets, crafting with plastic canvas, and crocheting baby sweaters. She crocheted baby blankets for each one of her grandchildren and would spend many evenings sitting in her favorite chair in the living room with the TV on, but her focus was on the project in her hands. For mom, family was everything. She was a caring and loving person and always put the wants and needs of others ahead of her own. This is the true definition of love!
Mom was a fighter! With God’s help, she overcame cancer in 2011 and we were blessed to enjoy her for another 10 years. When the cancer returned a few months ago, mom lacked the strength needed for the battle and God took His daughter home.
A private family service will be held on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with livestream viewing available. Interment will be at Steinbach Heritage Cemetery.
If friends so desire, donations in memory of Elsie Hildebrand may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba. A special thanks to all of the health care professionals at Bethesda Regional Health Centre. Your care and compassion kept her as comfortable as possible during this difficult time.
