Obituary

Grace Elizabeth (Betty) Phillips (nee Grant) was born August 13th, 1924 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Betty passed away peacefully on Friday May 7, 2021.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Alfred John Phillips. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children Sarah Spurrill (Greg), Grant Phillips, Alfred Phillips (Donna), Robert Phillips (Renita), Carol Steffan (Darrell), Wilson Phillips (Heidi), and grandchildren Darren and Brent Spurrill; Alex Phillips-Froese, Emma, Mason, and Ava Phillips; and Ryan and Keri Steffan. Betty had a large extended family with whom she cherished every encounter. Betty made many friends over the years and we will all miss her.

Betty was a young adult when WW2 began, and saw off some of her family and friends to the effort. Betty was trained as a nurse and worked throughout Canada. Betty was always a happy person and made many friends along the way. Betty marred late by the standards of the day, to Alfred Phillips, a farmer in Monominto, MB. They had six children and Betty worked on the farm and as a nurse at the St. Anne’s hospital. Betty enjoyed baking, knitting, reading, and doing word puzzles. Betty was always so happy to see her family and extended family, Betty had a way of making the world a bit less stressful. As the years passed and her abilities failed her, the love was returned by those that loved her. Her daughter Carol would see her nearly every day and was instrumental in her care and her placement at various facilities. Anyone should be so lucky. The family expresses their great appreciation for the kindnesses and assistance provided by Bethesda Personal Care home in Steinbach.

Livestreamed services will be held on Thursday May 13th, 2021 at 2pm at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach.
