Obituary

Kathy Peters, age 85 of Steinbach, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Kathy is survived by daughter Roberta, son Todd (Katherine), and brother Nathaniel (Lucille). She is also survived by brother-in-law Tim (Anne); grandchildren Natalie (Joel), Graham (Taeghen), Nolan and Finley; great-grandchildren Wren and Brooks; and other extended family members. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of Harry, sister Clara, and brothers Delbert and Norman.

Kathy was born in Steinbach but grew up in southwestern Manitoba. Her family worked at a sawmill and she took school by correspondence. Later she attended Prairie High School in Three Hills, Alberta, where she graduated.

Years later, she pursued teaching, beginning in one-room schoolhouses. Eventually, she made her way to Steinbach Junior High where she remained until her retirement at 55. During her teaching career, she taught every grade from kindergarten to grade 12. She loved teaching and was beloved by her students.

One day while filling up her car at Banman Gas Bar at Main and Highway 12, she caught the eye of a dashing young suitor who asked for her number. Harry later proposed and the two were married July 31, 1965. They both loved to travel, RVing through every American state except Hawaii. Together they visited over 50 countries. In retirement, they spent many winters living as snowbirds in Orlando, Florida. They become unofficial Disney guides to many family members and friends who visited them. Her last trip with Harry was an African safari. Kathy continued to travel after Harry passed away in 2017 and fulfilled her lifelong dream of visiting the Holy Land with her son, Todd.

Kathy accepted Jesus as her Saviour in 1983. She was a faithful attendee at Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church. In Florida, Harry and Kathy served their church by leading music. She had a deep faith and prayer life. She would often write out prayers for loved ones in her scrapbooks and diaries. She also memorized many Bible verses which she would often recite.

Kathy had many different hobbies including piano, sewing, embroidery, puzzles, and scrapbooks. Kathy’s home was rarely without pets. Kathy ran an AirBNB for critters including budgies, fish, dogs and a clowder of cats. Kathy loved reading. Her many bookshelves held a wide variety of topics.

Kathy loved her family. She was an encouraging and caring sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed.
