Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Joseph Stephen Seper, husband, father and grandfather on Friday, September 1, 2023, with family by his side.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Muriel (Hewitt) Seper, son Monty (Marla) Seper, Jason (Jacquie) Seper and daughter Terry (Paul) Seper-Boily and grandchildren Luke, Katarina, Liam, Dominique, Gabrielle, Nicolette, Noah, Nykolas and Ava.

He is predeceased by his parents Stephen and Theresa Seper, siblings Rose, Fred and Ann and granddaughter Angèle and parents-in-law Mervyn and Margaret Hewitt.

Dad was born in Bienfait Saskatchewan on October 6, 1940. He lived there until the age of 20 when he entered training to become an RCMP. He married the love of his life in 1964 and moved to their first posting in Flin Flon, Manitoba. They had Monty in 1967 then moved to Winnipeg and had Jason in 1969, followed by Terry in 1973. They moved to Portage La Prairie in 1977 for one year, then resided in Steinbach where he oversaw the rural detachment. He retired from the RCMP in 1983 with over 21 years of service. Dad took great pride in wearing the Red Serge. He then went on to work for Manitoba Public Insurance as a Fraudulent Claims Investigator for 16 years. In his retirement he enjoyed the farm life and tending to the various farm animals which included chickens, ducks, geese and their two horses: Sonny and Dandy. Dad was a Jack of all trades and master of none. Dad enjoyed the outdoor life from hunting, fishing, and fires by their seasonal trailer at Caddy Lake and later at Buffalo Point. His love for the outdoors was infectious and he passed on this love to his children and grandchildren. He was the biggest cheerleader for his children and grandchildren although a whistle from the stands was his sign to “pick up the pace”. What truly made Dad the best Papa/Grandpa was the sparkle in his eye when he’d get to spend quality time with his Grandchildren. Dad had a life well lived. We were blessed to have him for so many years and his legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren.

The family would like to extend our special thanks to Dr. Toop and sincere appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at Silver Lining Care and Bethesda Care Home. Dad really enjoyed the friendships he made and the special care he received.

A livestreamed Celebration of Life service will be held at the Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. with a light luncheon to follow.
