Obituary

Sonya Lenchyshyn Peacefully on October 6, 2023, at Bethesda Regional Health Center in Steinbach, MB, passed away at the age of 79 years from Pancreatic Cancer.

She is predeceased by her husband Lawrence Lenchyshyn (2012), daughter Shelley Lenchyshyn (2020), mother Josphine Mykytyn, father Dymtro Mykytyn, brothers John Mykytyn, Peter (Hilda) Mykytyn, sister Liz (Tom) Weston, and in laws: Dennis (Sally) Lenchyshyn, Alice (Tony) Makodanski, Nellie (Tony) Spilchuk, and Emmett Thompson.

She is survived by her sister Elsie Thompson, in-laws Gisela Mykytyn, Joanne (Julien) Gerard and Dianne Wallace. She loved her children, Lori (Denis) Laurencelle and Tim (Grace) Lenchyshyn. She cherished her five Grandchildren, Chris Lenchyshyn, Riley Laurencelle and Jeremy (Lindsay) Lenchyshyn, Shae (Brendon) Laurencelle and Amy (Alex) Lenchyshyn. She has numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss her tremendously.

Sonya was born March 18, 1944, in Rainy River, Ontario. When she turned 17, she came to Winnipeg, MB with her mother. She completed a course at Success Business College and got her first job at Ogilvy Mills. She married her husband of 49 years Lawrence Lenchyshyn. In 1963, they moved to Niverville, MB where she resided until her passing. They operated a dairy and grain farm for 29 years with her in laws Dennis (Sally) Lenchyshyn. Sonya’s son Tim (Grace) were involved in the operation until 2016 and Sonya retired at the age of 72. She told anyone that she loved retirement because she could wake up and do whatever she wanted.

She was the youngest in her family of five siblings; she really appreciated the friendship she carried on with her sister Elsie and sister in law Gisela up until her death. She looked forward to trips to the Casino with her in laws Dianne and Joanne. There were many phone calls and emails written to stay up to date on the news and family affairs.

She was a symbol of strength to all of us. When she turned 60 years, she lost the ability to walk but continued to maintain her level of contribution to her farm and family for another 19 years. She really enjoyed her flowers; she took pride in the ability to cut the lawn on the farm with the riding tractor. She used a golf cart, which provided her with a close connection to the farm allowing her to inspect every inch of it. She was also very computer literate.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre and Marni of Palliative Care for the care and compassion Sonya received.

Cremation has taken place and a private service will take place in the spring.
