Nettie Brandt was born at home near Morris, MB, on November 5, 1934, and passed away at the age of 89, in the Morris Hospital, after a lengthy period of decline, on December 9, 2023.
Nettie is predeceased by her parents, Henry H. and Tena Brandt, one sister Elma (only 3 weeks ago) and one brother-in-law, Jim Scott. She is survived by four sisters: Lena (Peter Janzen), Marie Scott, Tena (Levi Reimer), Martha (Art Dueck) and two brothers: Bernie (Hilda) and Hank (Betty), and many nieces and nephews.
After completing Grade 8 in Rosenhoff School, Nettie stayed home for 7 years to help on the farm before completing High School and earning a Teaching Certificate. After eight years of teaching in Mennville (near Riverton) and Rosenhoff, she took some time off to work in a children’s home in Germany. She then took some business courses and worked for 3 ½ years in the paint department at Loewen Millwork in Steinbach. Nettie ended her teaching career after teaching in New Hope and Gretna for 27 years when she retired in 1992. Teaching was her life; she was thorough and meticulous in preparation for teaching and known as a teacher with firm and high expectations, but kind and caring.
Nettie’s retirement years were filled with working part time in the office at Horizon Agro, socializing with friends, taking daily (sometimes multiple) walks, making quilts for MCC (frequently with Elma), knitting, and sewing for charity and doing many different crafts.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Margaret Klassen and the staff at Heritage Place, in Rosenort, for their watchful eye and working hard to enable Nettie to stay in assisted living for as long as possible. We also want to express special gratitude to the staff at the Morris Hospital for taking good care of her during the last few months of her life.
A livestreamed Celebration of Life service will be held for Nettie on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 11:00 am in the Emmanuel Baptist Church (220 Lucinda St S, Morris, MB) with lunch and a sharing session to follow. Public viewing will be held at the church prior to the funeral service. The burial will take place at the Rosenort Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
