Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Terry Lynn Hiebert, on Friday, September 20, 2024, after a brief illness.

Terry leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Martin Bergen, children Melissa, Samantha (Erik Laszchuk), and Trevor (Kelsey Giesbrecht); granddaughter Paisley Laszchuk; brother Grant (Loretta) Lane and their children Michelle, Justine, Claudia, Daniel, Matthew, Geraldine and their families; as well as her cousins Al Hiebert, Ron (Wendy) Dueck, Louella (Dennis) Friesen, Sandi Neufeld, and Pat Moule, who have always been her siblings in terms of their family relationship. Many other close relationships include members of the Bergen family, John (Helen), Abe (Sara), Jake (Helen), and Mary; and the families of each of her Dueck ‘siblings” named above as well as her best friend all through life, Shirley Reimer.

Terry is predeceased by her father, Abe (Abram H.) Hiebert, mother Bertha Roy, and cousins Lorna Hiebert and Hugo Moule.

Terry loved the simple life of country living. As a young girl, she was raised by the Peter H. (Helen) Dueck family in Kleefeld, MB. After the age of 10, she lived with her father, Abe Hiebert, in Winnipeg and Steinbach, where she attended school, but they settled back in Kleefeld in her teenage years. She loved to ride her horse, Tucker, for hours at a time, enjoying the friendship of other young people with a passion for horse riding. During this time she met Martin Bergen who would become her life partner.

Martin and Terry moved to Grunthal, MB, where their first daughter, Melissa, was born In 1990. The young family soon moved to Abbotsford, BC, in pursuit of Martin’s work. Their small family grew with the addition of Samantha and Trevor while in Abbotsford. With the kids entering school years, Terry and Martin moved back to Manitoba in 2003, living for a time in Blumenort before purchasing property and settling in Zhoda, MB. Here, Terry took on various jobs eventually securing permanent custodial employment at the Shevchenko School in Vita, MB. She celebrated her retirement this past June after years of dedicated service.

Terry had a loving, kind, and gentle spirit. She poured her life energy into her children, nurtured and cared for Martin, especially through the difficult season of post-accident recovery, and doted on her granddaughter Paisley. Terry was hardworking and took pride in her home and garden. Upon retirement, her plans were to expand her garden and spend time cultivating a variety of fruits and vegetables with which she could bless her family and friends with home grown goodness.

Terry’s generosity and loyalty are evident by the relationships she leaves behind. She is gone too soon, just as she was looking forward to rest and leisure, spending time with those she loved. Despite her small stature, her passing leaves a very large hole in our hearts. Although quiet, the absence of her presence among us is deeply felt by all who knew her. She has been a bond that holds us together, that steadies us in trouble, and her example of servanthood will be remembered always.

Rest well, Terry. You have fought the good fight and have finished well. We will miss you.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing prior to the service.
