Wally Sommerfeld age, 92, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024, at St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, MB.
Wally was born March 21st, 1932, on a farm in Brightholme District, Saskatchewan, and was the son of Adolf & Anna Sommerfeld. He attended school in Brightholme and later farmed there until 1961. He then went to Thompson, Manitoba to work at International Nickel Co. where he was a millwright worker and later a power engineer. Wally managed the hoist, tool crib, and boilers, while also inventing processes and tools that have helped develop the company.
Wally met his wife, Mabel, in Thompson and they were married February 17, 1968. They raised their four children (Bob, Eugene, Howard and Lori) together there. Mabel meant the world to Wally.
In 1988, after 28 years of service with INCO. Wally and Mabel retired and moved to Kelowna, B.C. They loved it there! From Kelowna, they travelled extensively throughout Canada, USA and Mexico by motorhome.
In the year 2000, Wally and Mabel moved to Steinbach, Manitoba to be closer to their daughter, Lori, and her children. Unfortunately, Mabel passed away January 9th, 2001.
Wally’s hobbies varied, and included woodworking, cars, motorbikes and airplanes. Wally got his pilot license in 1963 and flew for 24 years. In 1970, he decided to build an airplane of his own – a replica of the world famous P51-D Mustang of World War 2. After 14 years of weekends and evenings of work, he finally took the plane for its first flight in 1984. He said it was a challenging but rewarding experience.
Wally absolutely loved to drive and loved his cars. He enjoyed many road trips to Arizona and B.C. He would often say, “Some people drive to live. I live to drive!”
A private service was held.
