David (Dave) Loewen, age 82, of Winnipeg, MB., passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, MB., on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
Dave was born on May 18, 1942, to Jacob and Aganetha Loewen in Morris, MB., the third eldest of six children.
He is survived by his beloved wife Helen of 59 years, two daughters, Heather (Clint) and Tanya (Roy), seven grandchildren, Jesse, Daniel, Melanie ( Deon), Alexis (Evan), Alicia (Ben), Natasha (Chris), Joshua and five great-grandchildren, Scarlet, Connor, Mavrik, David and Benjamin.
Mourning the home going of their dear brother are Elma, Ben (Joan), Anne (Allen), Jim, Ed (Anne).
He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Aganetha Loewen, brother-in-law John and sister-in-law Neta.
Dave received his elementary education in rural Morris where he grew up. He enjoyed life on the farm and took great delight in working for some of his uncles, seeding and harvesting the fields.
Dave met Helen in 1964 and after the first date knew that this was his special person and married her in September 1965. They were blessed with two girls, Heather and Tanya.
He loved being a husband and dad, always looking for ways to make life easier for his wife and his girls. He took great joy in spending quality time with them.
Dave grew up in a spiritual environment with his family and church attendance. He experienced Jesus as his personal friend at age 16 and was water baptized upon his faith. He was totally devoted to loving and serving Jesus and did so by teaching Sunday school, ushering, bus driver, parking lot attendant, greeter, always looking for ways he could be of service. He attended Steinbach Bible College for one year and in 1979 we moved to Dallas, Texas, where he graduated with a Christian Education Diploma from Christ for the Nations Institute.
Our family loved travelling, camping trips, trips to Dallas to visit family and friends, later timeshare vacations in the U.S. and Canada and a boat cruise to Alaska. A Panama Canal cruise remained on Dave’s bucket list.
Work was considered more of a hobby to Dave and it was difficult at times to decipher between the two. He felt very comfortable with a steering wheel in his hand, whether it was a cement mixer, grain truck, 18 wheeler or a family vehicle.
In 1983, we, as a family made our home in Winnipeg, where Dave took a custodial position at DeFehr Furniture. We soon decided to take on apartment managing which ended in 2012 upon Dave’s retirement. In 1989 he had purchased a carpet cleaner, starting his own business on the side. He took great pride in all of his work, personal or business. Retirement plans changed quickly when Dave realized he was not prepared for that. He acquired a position at a local dealership, which added seven more years of employment. In his subsequent retirement he enjoyed carving, spending many hours in the sunshine on the balcony, adult colouring, word search and carrying a joke book with him. The car, shirt pocket and bathroom always sported joke books.
Dave was healthy, strong and loved life. Some injuries sustained in his twenties, and more recently, managed to catch up with him, resulting in a diagnosis of spinal stenosis and migraine headaches. A long hospital stay in 2022 brought out the fight in him. He fought valiantly to get back on his feet and we were so proud to see his progress and healing. The past few years have been challenging, and now recently Dave was hospitalized. After a brief stay he passed away.
Thank you to all our family, friends and to Pastor Ernest for your support, many prayers and encouraging words. Special thanks to the dedicated staff at St. Boniface Hospital ER, ICU and E6.
The livestreamed funeral service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service.
