Betty (Schellenberg) Isaac, aged 96, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, at Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, Manitoba. She was born in Kleefeld, Manitoba, on February 3, 1929, to John R. and Anna (Dueck) Schellenberg. Betty was the fourth of five children in the Schellenberg family.
Mom’s education took place at Gruenfeld School, where she attended all eight grades under the guidance of the same teacher. Betty and her siblings grew up helping run the store which her parents owned in Kleefeld. A highlight of her childhood was the family road trip they took to California to visit relatives. Mom was a spunky girl who enjoyed having fun with her friends. One fall she went to Ontario, with some friends, to work in a factory canning peaches.
On Good Friday, April 15, 1949, Walter Isaac asked for Mom’s hand in marriage. However, before they could get married, Mom got sick with pleurisy and was hospitalized for several months. They were married on October 22, 1950. Mom and Dad settled and farmed near Kleefeld where they raised their family. This union of 74 years was blessed with 5 children.
Mom gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized, together with Dad, into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on June 3, 1956. A few weeks before her passing she expressed her faith strengthened in Jesus’ sacrifice and His grace to see her through.
Mom was a devoted wife, mother, and dedicated homemaker, baking bread and cooking meals in her kitchen with the red gingham curtains. Many hours were spent sewing clothes and quilts. Handwork, such as knitting and crocheting, were always nearby. She loved to keep track of her family and friends, faithfully writing letters and remembering our birthdays. Mom enjoyed painting pictures, gardening, and spending time with grandchildren. She kept a diary for many decades and often referred back to them. Mom was thrifty, punctual, and weather aware to the end.
In the fall of 2024, after a short stay at Greendale Estates in Grunthal, Mom moved to Maplewood Manor to be with Dad. We are thankful for the dedicated care she received there these last few months after Dad passed away in November.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by her children – Beverly & Walter Toews, Conrad & Kathleen Isaac, Magdalene & Gary Penner, Eileen & Charles Isaac, and Bonnie & Roger Toews, all of Kleefeld, Manitoba; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law Abe & Mary Martens, and Alfred Isaac; 4 sisters-in-law Leona Braun, Gladys & Milton Fast, Jean & Clarence Giesbrecht, and Joyce Koop.
She was predeceased by her husband Walter, and 2 infant granddaughters; 2 brothers, Paul in childhood, and Levi & Lena Schellenberg; 2 sisters Helen Martens, and Frieda & Jake Peters; 4 of Dad’s siblings and 7 of his in-laws.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Kleefeld, MB., with interment to follow at the church cemetery.
