Obituary

Effie Senkow, aged 94 years, formerly of Sarto, MB., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.

She was born July 24th, 1930, in Pansy, MB., to parents Oleksa & Anna Hrabchak. She was the youngest in the family.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter in 2012, by her parents and three sisters Mary, Lena, Elsie and brothers-in-law Peter Naherniak, Mike Bazowsky and James Romaniuk, Ed Senkow, Frank Senkow, sisters-in-law Olga Strauss and Rose Senkow.

She is survived by her sons Mel (Christine), Wally (Grace Mason), grandchildren Corey (Antonietta), Gerry (Cheryl), Ryan (Dorian), Brian (Mandy) and Kerri. Great-grandchildren Elena, Matthew, Justin, Hayden, Coltyn, Wyatt, Brodie, Sadie, Jayda, Rylan and Madison, brother-in-law Gill Strauss and many nieces and nephews.

She grew up with her sisters and worked on the family farm at her birthplace and attended Sarto School.

As a young girl her daily chores were milking cows, raising chickens, gardening, canning and housekeeping all without electricity or tractors. She loved going to dances where she met a young man named Walter and on her birthday July 24, 1948, they exchanged vows to start a new life of their own.

Once again, she continued the ever-familiar milking cows, raising chickens, gardening and housekeeping but this time more modernized with use of milking machines, lights, refrigerator and a tractor.

In 1975 Mom and dad retired off the family farm and moved to Winnipeg for a short term and finally settled in Steinbach on Reimer Ave.

Mom provided care for dad after his stroke but eventually found it too demanding and dad was placed into Bethesda PCH. She continued to live alone and after dad died in 2012, her health started to decline. After several assessments, doctors determined she could no longer live alone and was placed into the Vita PCH in 2019.

Even though mom led a quiet social life she always knew what was happening around her, or thought was happening and not afraid to speak what was on her mind.

Mom, we hope you now have found peace, comfort and tranquility.

From our family we would like to extend our appreciation and a special thank you to the staff at the Vita PCH for the many years of caregiving, to Birchwood for their compassion and service and to the doctors and nurses at Bethesda Hospital for the care and comfort they gave mother.

Vichnaya Pamyat

As per her wishes, a private family service will take place.
