Obituary

John R Friesen, age 93, of Steinbach, MB., passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Tina, his three children, Gary (Jane) Friesen, Lorna (Ken) Hiebert, Brian (Bev) Friesen; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Steenson, Joel Friesen, Kevin Falk, Kyle (Jenn) Falk, Shiyrah (Eric) Bueckert, Caelan Friesen, Logan (Anna Laura) Friesen; five great-grandchildren, Katrina, Mia, Autumn, Everett, Claire; and five step-grandchildren and their families. He is also survived by one brother, Max (Doreen), three sisters, Rose (Ben) Esau, Linda Froese, Anne (John) Neufeld, three brothers-in-law, John Klassen, John (Helen) Hildebrand, Harry (Sharon) Hildebrand.

He is predeceased by one grandson Michael James Friesen. He is also predeceased by his parents, two sisters, eight brothers-in-law, seven sisters-in-law.

Dad was born on February 6, 1932 to Abram J. J. and Mary Friesen, in Blumenhoff, MB., of the rural Municipality of Rhineland.

In his early years, Dad worked in a sugar beet factory in Winnipeg and on various farms. In his early 20s, he was hired by Barkman’s Plumbing and Heating, where he continued to work until he had to retire at 64 years of age due to health.

Dad was 23 years old when he met Mom in 1955, fell in love and they married on September 8, 1957. Dad and Mom settled in Steinbach, where they started their family about a year later.

Dad was deeply involved in his church, first as an outdoor usher and then as an indoor usher for many years. Dad volunteered a lot of time to the church, including working many hours on maintenance and plumbing.

After Dad retired, he and Mom enjoyed golfing, going on bus tours, and taking a lot of car rides together.

Dad was a quiet man, steadfast in his faith. He had a witty sense of humor, even in his later years as he struggled with dementia. Dad was very easy going, which was also appreciated by his home care workers and staff at Rest Haven.

We love you Dad; we miss you and look forward to seeing you again.

The family wishes to thank Dad’s home care workers and the staff at Rest Haven who went out of their way to make him feel loved and cared for. We appreciate all the care and compassion shown to dad, especially in the last week.

The funeral service for John R Friesen will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing for one hour, prior to the service. A private interment will follow the service.
