Obituary

John was born in Kronsgart, Manitoba, August 12, 1933, the fifth of eight children. He grew up on the family farm, first in Kronsgart, later in Roland and finally in Manitou. Life consisted of hard work and making music. Money was scarce so most siblings, Dad included, quit school early to help at home and acquire jobs.

Both of John’s grandads were preachers of the Word at the local churches in southern Manitoba: Rev Gerald Klassen and Jacob B. Penner. His father’s commitment to hold daily devotions, singing as a family at home and in churches, started John on the right path. As a response to the call of the Holy Spirit, John accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was 11 years old at a George Bronk Camp Meeting held in Winkler. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith in a creek at Manitou at the age of 17.

While on the family farm, John had his own livestock: one boar, five sows and 28 piglets, along with a John Deere “B” tractor and a 1 ton truck for hauling as he provided a firewood cutting services in the Manitou area. John moved to the city in March 1956 and acquired his first job with the aid of his Uncle David Klassen at Western Glove Clothing Factory. He remained there for three years and then applied to work at Canada Wire and Cable Company in Winnipeg (name was later changed to Alcatel). His official working career there lasted 36.5 years and he retired at the age of 62.5. But we all know better; he never really did retire.

When Dad arrived in Winnipeg, he started participating in youth events where his older sister Betty was attending. That is where he met a young lady named Mary Dueck in August 1956. Dad was quick to action and sold a portion of his livestock to pay for an engagement ring. They were married in June 1957. God blessed them with four children: Ronald, Richard, Robert and Darlene.

Dad and Mom were members of the Southend Mennonite Brethren Church. Later, Mom and Dad moved with a large group of members to start the Portage Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church where they remained members till their passing. They always financially supporting the church and many mission fields.

With three rambunctious sons and one sweet, adorable daughter, Dad chose to raise them with the example led by his father; hard work, music and the Word of God. Dad daily relied on the Lord for wisdom, knowledge and discernment to discipline, encourage and guide his children.

Dad loved to work and did not limit his efforts and talents to just Manitoba but included BC and Alberta as well. If there was a need from family, friends or others, he was there; building, renovating and painting; fences, decks, houses and garages. The list goes on, but rest assured he was there. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord. Colossians 3:23

Dad’s service to the Lord was also through music. He directed a children’s choir, participated as a worship leader, sang in quartets, male choruses, church choirs and parades of quartets. He also served at Union Gospel. If there was a note to be heard Dad wasn’t going to miss the beat, he would be involved: church services, weddings, funerals, family gatherings, etc. Dad’s comment was always “Come on fellows, lets sing”.

When Dad was not working, eating, sleeping and singing, he was reading through the Bible and multiple other books. Even with failing eyesight, he still read a book a week.

Dad’s life changed when his wife and lifelong partner of 66.5 years became ill and passed away. Although he never complained, he missed her. We were told by the Lindenwood Manor staff that Dad will be missed as he was an encourager to both staff and residents. He was instrumental in putting on two male chorus events one in spring of 2024 and again later that year for Christmas. An Easter event 2025 was in the planning stage.

Prior to Dad’s passing, he was predeceased by his wife, both sets of parents, four brothers, one sister, one grandson – Jamie Penner, numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, a nephew and a great nephew.

Dad passed away peacefully at home in Lindenwood Manor and is lovingly remembered by his children Ronald (Heather), Richard (Kathy), Robert (Shirley) and Darlene, nine grandchildren and their spouses, 17 great-grandchildren, one brother, one sister, three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews.

Dad was very thankful and grateful to God for His love, grace and mercy that renewed him each and every morning as he looked to exemplify Jesus every day. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:15-17

Dad’s desire was that his family throughout the generations to come would accept Jesus as Lord of their lives. Likewise for his friends, here and now, that they too would live in the same Hope, Joy, Peace and Love found only in the Name of Jesus.

The livestreamed funeral service will be held on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., at Portage Avenue Church, 1420 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
